Former Test Captain Aminul Islam was appointed as the Chief of Bangladesh Cricket Board on Friday. Islam replaces Faruque Ahmed who was ousted due to political reasons by the directors of the BCB.

Aminul Islam captained the Bangladesh cricket team at the 1999 World Cup, the first for the side. Apart from prolific records as a player, Aminul Islam also stayed as an advisory at development roles in the International Cricket Council and the Asian Cricket Council since retiring as a player.

On being elected the Chief of Board, Aminul Islam said, “This is a new high for me”. The leadership shift comes after the resignation of Nazmul Hassan, the previous BCB president, who was a close ally of the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who was ousted in 2024.

The leadership change can also be due to the fact that the Bangladesh team suffered a disappointing T20 loss against the United Arab Emirates in May.
