The English cricketing fans have something to cheer about since fast bowler Jofra Archer rejoins the England cricket team after an absence of over four years in the field of Test cricket. Today, the gifted bowler will feature in the test match between England and India at the Lord’s Cricket Ground on Thursday as he makes his re-entry into the international cricket world after spending time on the treatment table with critical injuries.
England cricket is in desperate need of Archer, who will bring the pace and skill required on the pitches of India, which is one of the strongest batting units in recent times. His last Test performance was in 2021, and now he is all set to get his talent on the famous Lord’s pitch where he first played as an England Test captain.
Jofra Archer’s Journey Back to the England Cricket Team
The road back to the England cricket team has been both long and arduous for Jofra Archer. The fast bowler had serious trouble with his elbow and back, which sidelined the bowler in Test cricket for four and a half years. It would not be until this period of time that he would be able to play the full-length games of cricket, the Test games that involve five days to play.
Ben Stokes, the team captain, feels that Archer is prepared to resume his playing career in English cricket. Stokes added: “Jofra has had a lot of cricket over the past two-and-a-half years. Otherwise, he would not be chosen to play on the team.”
The time when Archer returns is not far off from when he initially joined the England cricket team in 2019. At that moment, England was fighting against Australian Steven Smith, and Archer changed the game with his fast bowling. At this moment, England requires him to bowl against Shubman Gill, who has scored 430 runs in the previous match.
Archer will come in to fill the shoes of Josh Tongue. Although Tongue has grabbed 11 wickets in the series, he has been costly, and he has averaged 4.56 runs per over. The management team feels that Archer, in terms of speed and experience, can assist England to compete better with India.
England Cricket Team Strategy for the Lord’s Test
The England cricket team will only change one player in its team to play in the Lord’s Test. Other than welcoming back Jofra Archer, they are retaining the same players who performed dismally in the last game. Other key bowlers like Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse will be retained, although they have bowled a lot of overs in the first two Test matches.
England skipper Ben Stokes made it clear that his team requested a lively pitch at Lord which will aid fast bowlers. Nevertheless, Lords pitches have been trundling over the last couple of years, which could make hitting the ball around a lot easier as the game progresses.
Jofra Archer has been training a lot with the team. Recently, in the final Test match, he bowled in the practice pitches with the observation of the England coaches. Coaching staff, comprising the head coach Brendon McCullum, think that he is now ready to play cricket in England.
The crew is also mindful in terms of the workload for Archer. They do not want him to be overused as they have done so in the past, and this has resulted in his injuries.
