The 27 year old Bangladesh All Rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz will be taking over the leadership of the national side from Najmul Hossain Shanto. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced the new captaincy on Thursday, which will be for 12 months.
Miraz will be leading the Bangladesh team in the ODI format full time from the upcoming Sri Lanka series that has 3 ODI games. Previously Miraz has taken over the captaincy tentatively from Shinto in four ODIs. From the coming Sri Lankan series, Miraz will be beginning his captaincy tenure for full time.
Chairman of BCB’s Cricket Operations Committee Nazmul Abedeen said, “The Board felt that Miraz’s consistent performances with the bat and ball, his ability to fight and inspire the team and his energetic presence on and off the field make him an ideal candidate to lead the ODI side during a transitional time. We believe he has the temperament and maturity to take Bangladesh forward in this format.”
He also thanked former skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto for his positivity and character he demonstrated as a captain of the national side and appreciated his batting abilities which will be of good use to the team.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz is currently ranked at Fourth in the ICC ODI Ranking, the highest ever for a Bangladesh player and has excellent potential as a batsman with 1617 runs and delivering 110 wickets from the 150 ODI matches he played. He is also among the likes of Mohammad Rafique, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, and Shakib Al Hasan in maintaining an elite record of mounting 1000 runs and 100+ wickets in the ODI format.
On being selected as the ODI skipper, Miraz said, “It is a huge honour for me to be entrusted with this responsibility by the Board. Leading the country is a dream for any cricketer and I am grateful for the confidence the Board has shown in me. I have every faith in this team. We have the talent and the belief to play fearless cricket. I want us to perform with confidence, play without inhibition and continue giving our best for the country.”
