People today have short attention spans and quickly scroll through content. One man has quietly turned social media into a nature-based classroom. Azharul Islam Khan, also known as “Brikkho Bondhu” (Plant Friend), is now an online environmental teacher. He has over a million followers who love his simple but powerful plant stories.

Who is “Brikkho Bondhu”?

For many people in Bangladesh, Brikkho Bondhu is more than just a content creator; he is also a guide to nature. Azharul Islam Khan began studying plants in 2008, not to become famous, but because he was interested in them and wanted to learn more. But it wasn’t until 2023 that he put what he had learned online, turning years of self-study into short, easy-to-understand lessons. He talks like a friend instead, and he often stands next to plants in their natural habitat. People feel like they are learning from a neighbour they can trust instead of an expert in the field.

Telling Stories with Common Plants

Brikkho Bondhu is different because he can make the normal seem special. His short videos are about:

  • Finding plants that grow in Bangladesh that are both well-known and not so well-known
  • Telling people how plants like kukurchita and handishoor can be used for medicine and other things
  • Bringing in invasive plants like the Singapore daisy, which are slowly taking over ecosystems in the area

Each video is meant to be short, interesting, and informative. This makes them great for Facebook and YouTube, where people have short attention spans but are very interested.

Nature Advocate

Brikkho advocates for change and action by highlighting the loss of 262 of approximately 6,000 plant species in Bangladesh, which occur due to human activity; he states that many of these species are currently endangered and in danger of becoming extinct.

He also tells people to do something. He makes it clear that conservation begins at home. He wants people to do their part, whether it’s planting trees during the monsoon season, taking care of local plants, or just knowing how important native species are.

Building an Eco-Friendly Community Online

Brikkho Bondhu’s rise shows how the way people share information has changed over time. People often say that social media is full of shallow content, but if you use it right, it can be a great way to teach people from the ground up.
