The capital Dhaka was placed under heavy security Friday after a wave of crude bomb blasts and bus arsons shook the city. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has set up more than 200 checkpoints at key points, including flyovers, major intersections and entry and exit points of the city, to prevent further incidents and trace those responsible.
Where the Blasts Happened
Explosions were heard in at least seven places, including Malibagh, Mohakhali, Agargaon, Jatrabari, Moghbazar, Babubazar and Rampura. Another blast was heard at Dhaka College and Science Laboratory. Two bombs were thrown from a flyover and exploded near Malibagh Rail Gate, while another went off in the Amtoli area of Mohakhali, the sources said. The blasts injured at least three people. In another incident, a bus that was seized following a previous accident was torched in front of Kafrul Police Station.
Police Response
DMP Additional Commissioner and Detective Branch Chief Md Shafiqul Islam said that law enforcement agencies have increased patrolling and monitoring to ensure public safety and that those responsible will be brought to justice.
Plainclothes police have joined uniformed officers to be on the lookout for suspicious movements, especially on motorcycles that are believed to have been used in several attacks.
In the 24-hour operation, police picked up 515 persons and booked 47 separate cases. Two foreign-made pistols, ammunition, machetes and knives were recovered during raids. Explosive crude bombs were recovered with 53 iron nails. Officers also seized over 94 kilograms of cannabis, over 11,000 yaba pills and heroin in the wider search operation.

Investigation continues
The crackdown has been massive, but investigators have not yet identified the bomb-makers or traced the explosives to their source. The reports say the toll has since risen to 15 bomb sites and at least 10 burnt buses, with security checkpoints numbering around 260 across the capital. “If the attacks are not stopped, the violence will rise. There have been no coordination meetings lately to plan strategies to counter the attacks,” said a former DMP official.
DMP officials say checkpoints and patrols will continue until the network behind the coordinated attacks is uncovered. Police are expanding their search for those responsible, and residents in affected neighbourhoods have been advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
