A busy construction site deep within central Iran’s mountains has become one of the most watched locations in the world. Located near the town of Natanz, Pickaxe Mountain has been threatened by the U.S. President Donald Trump as he has said that it will be targeted if Washington can see any signs of nuclear activity. Although the suspected Iran nuclear site is thousands of miles away, it can affect many people’s household budgets.
What Is Pickaxe Mountain?
Pickaxe Mountain is a highly fortified underground site just one mile from Natanz, which was one of the bombarded locations in June 2025. Satellite images have shown evidence of tunnels leading in and work to make the tunnels more resistant. Western and Israeli Intelligence believe there may be enrichment machines stored within but it is not known for sure. Iran has stated that they build their facilities underground to shield themselves against sabotage.
In addition to this, the site would be very hard to destroy. Even the largest bunker buster bomb owned by Americans, the Massive Ordnance Penetrator would fail to destroy it. There is no guarantee that it will be destroyed. Some analysts have also said that in 2025 the location wasn’t targeted by America, meaning that it may not have been seen as an immediate threat.
Satellite Images and the Dispute Over Pickaxe Mountain
As the UN nuclear inspectors have not been able to enter Iran since the recent conflict started, most information about Pickaxe Mountain comes from satellite images. A research group based in Washington called the Institute for Science and International Security said that there was evidence of vehicles moving around the location in late June, therefore suggesting that construction work is still going on within the mountain. They argued that it goes against the U.S.-Iran deal on the June 17 agreement asking Iran to halt their nuclear programme. However President Trump has said that they are not seeing any activity from the location. This shows that there are no clear facts.
Iran’s Warning and the Risk of a Wider Conflict
Tehran has not remained quiet. Their top military command has said that if America were to attack their nuclear sites it would be seen as an escalation in the regional conflict. They have also said that American interests and those of their allies could become legitimate targets. This causes concern for far away governments as an attack on a mountain could lead into a large scale conflict.
Why the Pickaxe Mountain Story Matters for Bangladesh
Bangladesh depends on importing fuel and gas, often going through the gulf. Iran has stated that they will sometimes close off the Strait of Hormuz, causing oil prices to rise. This means that fuel prices, electricity bills and food prices all rise. Families in Dhaka and Chattogram will feel the impact quickly.
Millions of Bangladeshis work abroad in the Gulf and send money back every month. If there was a wider conflict then this would put them in danger and slow down the remittances coming back to help rural families.
