Autumn is a wonderful season to visit Bangladesh, characterised by great weather, colourful festivities, and a spirit of togetherness. The season is strongly linked to religious festivities, harvest traditions, cultural events, and the Bengali way of life. Here are a few reasons to celebrate autumn in Bangladesh, from bustling pandals to folk celebrations.

Seven Festivals and Traditions That Bring Autumn to Bangladesh.

1. Durga Puja

Durga Puja is another important Hindu festival, which is observed by many people in Bangladesh. The Durga Puja festival memorialises Goddess Durga and calls people together in a large celebratory gathering for several days of festivities, prayers, and culture. Festivals are displayed with a beautifully decorated pandal, idol, lights, and traditional accessories, and are seen in different cities and towns. Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet are some of the places where they are celebrated with full passion. The concluding day, which is called Vijayadashami, is usually celebrated with processions and immersion of Durga idols.

2. Mahalaya

Mahalaya is associated with Bengali culture and traditionally signifies the countdown to Durga Puja. People celebrate the occasion with prayer and religious rituals. The Bengalis also follow the tradition of listening to the reciter recite religious texts. For several other families, Mahalaya marks the beginning of that mighty rush of emotion that is the season of Durga Puja.

3. Kojagari Lakshmi Puja

Kojagari Lakshmi Puja is celebrated by a large number of Bengali Hindu families in the season of the autumn full moon. It is a festival of the divine Goddess Lakshmi. Before prayers, many families clean and spruce up their homes. Other designs besides mandala designs are made on the floors and at entrances. These are called alpana designs. The festival fuses religious traditions with family reunions and Bengali customs.

4. Nabanna and the harvest tradition

However, more often than not, on Nabanna, new rice is used, which includes newly harvested rice. The importance of farming for Bengalis is what makes harvest rituals so significant. In Nabanna, they would use fresh rice grains from the season and even throw in plenty of local vegetables and fruit. Traditional Rajasthani dishes can be made in Sardā.

5. Traditional alpana art

A wonderful opportunity to witness the traditional Bengali art of alpana is during the autumn festivals. These are often made on floors and with rice paste. Amongst others, it can be adorned with blossoms, geometric patterns, footprints, and common style designs. Used most regularly on religious occasions, it is an integral part of Bengali pretty festivals.
