Bangladesh observed the holy Eid-e-Miladunnabi on Wednesday, August 26, marking the birth and death anniversary of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) with religious solemnity across the country. On the 12th of Rabiul Awal in 570 AD, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was born in Makkah, bringing divine blessings and a message of peace for mankind, and he passed away on the same day in 632 AD.
A Day Of National Observance
The day was marked as a public holiday nationwide, with the national flag hoisted atop government, semi-government, autonomous and private buildings, while important roads and key locations in the capital were decorated with national and colourful flags and banners inscribed with the Kalima Tayyiba. President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman issued separate messages greeting Muslims across the world on the occasion.
Fortnight-Long Siratunnabi Programme
Ahead of the observance, the president inaugurated the Islamic Foundation’s fortnight-long “Siratunnabi (PBUH) Programme” at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka. Renowned Islamic scholars are scheduled to deliver sermons daily from after Maghrib prayers until 10 pm during the fortnight, with the events aimed at emphasising morality, humanity, tolerance and peace by following the ideals and Sunnah of the Prophet.
Special Prayers And Cultural Events
Special prayers were offered at mosques across the country, including at the Bangladesh Secretariat Mosque. The Islamic Foundation organised a range of religious and cultural programmes, including Qirat and Naat recitations, poetry readings, cultural competitions, and an Arabic Khutba writing contest. A month-long Islamic book fair was also held at the south plaza of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, while state broadcasters Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar aired special programmes to mark the occasion.

Divisional, district and upazila administrations, city corporations, municipalities and the armed forces held discussions and doa mahfils in their respective jurisdictions, reflecting the scale of the government’s coordinated observance effort. Bangladesh’s diplomatic missions abroad also marked the day with due respect, and relevant ministries were instructed to maintain peace and law and order throughout the observance.
A Tradition Rooted In Devotion
Across the country, families and communities have long marked the occasion with milad mahfils, gatherings that combine recitation of the Prophet’s biography with prayers and blessings, along with the distribution of tabarruk, or blessed food, to neighbours and worshippers. In parts of Old Dhaka, the day is also associated with processions and a longstanding tradition of communal Milad gatherings, underscoring the deep cultural and spiritual significance the observance continues to hold for Bangladesh’s Muslim majority.
