Southwest Bangladesh is doubly stressed. Khulna and Satkhira are suffering at the same time with fierce heat and salty rivers.
Heat That Keeps Getting Worse
Khulna recorded 42°C in May 2024, and early June 2026 temperatures were noticeably warmer than in 2020. In April, a heatwave gripped Khulna while power shortages deepened the crisis.
Salt Is Taking Over Farmland
About 57 percent of cultivable land across Bagerhat, Khulna, Narail and Satkhira has salinity above 8 dS/m, a level that rules out most crops. Salinity also arrives earlier now. In Bagerhat it can begin entering farmland as early as November, not January.
No Safe Water to Drink
By 2026, the drinking water shortage in Satkhira, Khulna and Bagerhat has become a lasting emergency. Families walk long distances to find a safe source.
What Is Helping Farmers
Agricultural officials are urging farmers to grow salt-tolerant rice varieties such as BRRI dhan97. Solar desalination plants also supply fresh water in parts of Satkhira, but high upkeep costs limit their spread.
Even if El Niño fades, the salt and heat problems will not disappear. Experts say coastal communities need urgent planning.
