Old Dhaka was buzzing on Monday (2nd November 2026). Jagannath University celebrated its 21st founding anniversary of establishment with a huge celebration throughout the day. This included a rally, art exhibition and rock concert. Students, faculty members and alumni (pridefully known as Jabians) came together to celebrate University Day. The theme for this year was about celebrating youthful energy and unity within the Jabian community.
Rally in the morning
The day started off with the raising of the national flag after which, there was a vibrant rally. In previous years there has been a procession around the campus, Raisaheb Bazar and Victoria Park and back to the gate. As last year was a low-key affair due to the campus being in mourning for a student, this meant many people felt this event had extra meaning.
Future Ahead
Later on there was a discussion meeting where the Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed came along as chief guest. He encouraged universities to be at the forefront of creating a technologically advanced, meritocratic and knowledgeable society. He also reminded everyone how the movement to create Jagannath College into a University started in the 1990s and became law in 2005. This makes sense when considering how old the institution is, originally starting as a school in 1858.
Art Exhibition
Following the speeches there was an art exhibition across the campus by the Faculty of Fine Arts. Students were walking around looking at the artwork created by their peers. The afternoon was made nice and relaxed with prayers and cultural performances. There has been a growing interest in music on campus and recently the music festival was brought back to life after a 6 year hiatus.
Rock Concert in the Evening
The evening was all about the music. James, the much loved Nagar Baul and one of the most well-known rock stars in Bangladesh was due to perform at 6.30pm. Many young Bangladeshis can relate to his songs and having him perform live on campus will create some amazing memories.
Jagannath have proved that they can celebrate their history, encourage young artists and know how to have a great party 21 years after becoming a public university!
