A two-day folk culture festival began in Mymensingh on Friday, October 30. It runs until Saturday, October 31, at the Boishakhi Mancha in Joynul Abedin Park.
Organised for Nazrul Year
The Mymensingh district administration is organising the fair as part of Nazrul Year celebrations. It brings the region’s folk traditions to the stage in a public programme open to residents and visitors.
Day One: Pala Gaan and Baul Performances
On the opening evening, a guru-shishya pala gaan performance started at 6pm. Kuddus Boyati is scheduled to perform at 8pm. Pala gaan is a traditional form in which singers answer each other in verse, and it has deep roots in Mymensingh’s rural culture.
Day Two: Mohua and Folk Dance
On Saturday, the programme begins at 6pm with the gitinrityanatya “Mohua”, based on the Mymensingha Gitika, the ballad collection that has made the region’s folk literature widely known. Folk dances will follow.
Why It Matters
Events like this give local artistes a public stage and introduce younger audiences to traditions that are fading from daily life. Setting the festival in a central town park also makes it easy for families to attend.
Organisers say the programme aims to preserve and promote the region’s cultural heritage. Anyone planning to attend the final day should arrive before 6pm on Saturday.
