DHAKA, May 23, 2026 — The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued a fresh weather forecast warning of heavy rainfall and gusty winds across several northern and northeastern divisions of the country, urging residents to remain alert over the coming days.
BMD Issues Alert for Three Key Divisions
According to the Met office bulletin, light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally winds and lightning flashes are likely to occur at many places over Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions. The bulletin also forecast moderately heavy to very heavy rainfall at places over these three divisions.
Residents in low-lying areas, riverbanks, and agricultural zones across these regions have been advised to take precautionary measures and stay updated with official weather communications.
Rainfall Activity Across Other Divisions
The weather forecast also covers other parts of Bangladesh, though with less intensity. Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are expected at a few places over Rajshahi and Dhaka divisions, and at one or two places over Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions.
Day and night temperatures may rise slightly across the country.
River Port Warnings Issued
Alongside the general forecast, river port warnings have been raised for several inland waterway regions. Over the regions of Rangpur, Dinajpur, Tangail, Mymensingh and Sylhet, temporary gusty or squally winds from the west or northwest at speeds of 45–60 km/h, along with rain or thundershowers, may occur. River ports in these areas have been advised to display cautionary signal number 1.
Pre-Monsoon Weather Pattern in Play
Meteorologists attribute the current pattern to intensified pre-monsoon convective activity. Kalbaishakhi storms with lightning and winds blowing from the west or northwest at speeds of 60–80 km per hour may sweep over the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions. The Kalbaishakhi, or nor’wester, is a seasonal storm typical of late April and May in Bangladesh and eastern India.

Five-Day Outlook
Rainfall activity is expected to continue over the coming days, according to the Met Office outlook. Forecasters note that intensity may vary by division, with the northeastern belt — particularly Sylhet — likely to see a sustained spell of showers due to its proximity to the hills of Meghalaya and high moisture influx from the Bay of Bengal.
Advice to the Public
Authorities and disaster management officials are urging citizens across affected divisions to:
- Avoid open fields and tall trees during lightning and thunderstorm activity
- Secure rooftops, temporary shelters and agricultural equipment ahead of gusty wind spells
- Keep emergency contact numbers handy, particularly in flash-flood-prone districts like Sunamganj, Netrokona and Kurigram
