To get an Indian visa in May 2026, visit the official Government of India portal for e-Visa or regular visas, plus the new mandatory e-Arrival Card to be completed 48-72 hours before arrival. This more stringent digital pre-arrival form applies to all foreigners, including e-visa holders, to facilitate immigration and health checks.

Select Visa Type

Opt for e-Visa for brief visits if qualified: Tourist (1 year maximum), Business, Medical, Conference, or Medical Attendant categories fit most tourists from over 160 nationalities. Use regular paper visas for long-term requirements such as work, student, journalist, or if your country does not have access to e-Visas.

e-Visa: Processing time is 72 hours to 4 days. Regular Visa: Has to be submitted in person at VFS centres.

Applying for an e-Visa

Only access the official site: https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa. Choose your category wisely—mismatches lead to rejections.

Fill the form with exact passport-matched details: bio-data, travel dates, entry/exit airports, occupation, and India address. Upload a clear colour scan of your passport (valid for 6+ months), a recent photo on a white background (<1MB), and an optional itinerary or booking.

Pay fees online by card (e.g., $25-80 for tourist e-Visa, depending on nationality and duration). Get ETA PDF by email, print it and show it at 30+ designated airports with your passport for stamping.

Normal Visa Application

Fill the form and register yourself on https://indianvisaonline.gov.in. Make an appointment at the nearest VFS Global centre/Indian consulate.

You must submit in person: a full, signed form, a passport, photos, proof of address/purpose (e.g. invites, medical letters), and an itinerary. Pay on-site; processing takes 5-15 days. Collect stamped passport or request mail return.

New e-Arrival Card Requirement

All arrivals must fill the e-Arrival Card online 72 hours max before landing – systems often reject after 48 hours. Visit the official portal (india-arrivalcard.gov.in or the link provided in the flight email)

Enter passport info, flight/seat details, India address and health declarations. Generate a QR confirmation to show with the ETA/passport at immigration – failure blocks entry.
