Bangladesh is dealing with an extreme heatwave, and the humidity and sun are putting people in serious danger. And cities like Dhaka are feeling even hotter from the urban heat island effect. The discomfort has turned into life-threatening heat-related illnesses. One of the most common of these is heatstroke.
Heatstroke occurs when the body’s temperature reaches or exceeds 40°C, and its cooling mechanisms are no longer functioning. Symptoms of heatstroke include drowsiness or confusion, nausea, and a rapid heartbeat; all of which are aggravated by high humidity. When it’s humid, sweat can’t evaporate easily, so your body’s ability to cool itself will be severely limited, and the risk of heatstroke will increase.
Drinking Water Is Your Best Defence
Drinking fluids is the most effective way to avoidheat-related illnesses; don’t wait until you’re thirsty to start drinking. Drink water constantly throughout the day—from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to bed (at least 2 litres per day). Electrolyte replacements can be made with electrolyte-based drinks like ORS, coconut water, or lemon water.
Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and sugary drinks. While they may be refreshing, they will only exacerbate your dehydration issue.
Avoid the Worst Heat Hours
The sun is generally at its strongest from 12 to 4 pm, so it’s best to avoid being outside during these hours. If you need to go outside, wear light colored, loose-fitting clothing and bring either an umbrella or a hat with you. Also, consider running errands early in the morning or late at night to avoid the heat of the day.
Take special precautions with vulnerable individuals
Children and the elderly, as well as anyone who works outside, are at a greater risk of dehydration and heat exhaustion – make sure they are drinking adequate amounts of fluids and are taking frequent breaks in a cool area or shade.
If you manage employees or staff, create schedules during a heat wave that allow for flexible working hours and location so that they can avoid serious health issues as well.

Cooling off is easy with some simple tricks
You don’t need complex equipment. Showers, wet rags on your body, and breezy ventilation will help cool your entire body down. Close your windows and curtains to block out the sun and provide the most cooling effect while using fans and/or cooling devices.
If you notice signs of heat exhaustion, go directly to a cool place, loosen uncomfortable clothing and/or water if the person is conscious, as you need to seek immediate medical attention if you believe that the person has suffered from heat stroke or can suffer serious injury caused by not getting immediate medical attention.
