The Bangladesh government has established a specialized committee to expedite PayPal’s entry into the country, a significant victory for its thriving freelance economy. The prime minister, Tarique Rahman, confirmed this development during a recent parliament session and emphasized how closely linked the PayPal issue is with the wider growth of IT and job creation in Bangladesh.
Committee Steps Up PayPal Push
The goal of the newly-created committee is to optimize existing Bangladesh hi-tech parks, software hubs and ICT centers and also to resolve issues related to enabling the integration of PayPal into the country. The committee will enable freelancers around the world to receive payments quickly from their work through secure banking channels.
The newly created committee is also an extension of the Bangladesh Bank’s announcement made in December 2025 concerning the priority given to facilitating cross-border transactions for IT workers and e-commerce companies.

Freelancer Benefits and 2026 Outlook
Over 750,000 Bangladeshi freelancers will benefit from the opportunity to access global freelance platforms such as Upwork and Fiverr more easily. Under a five-year plan, the Bangladeshi government is targeting the issuance of ID cards for 200,000 freelancers and providing training for 1,000 freelancers on advanced skill sets.
While there is no set date for PayPal’s launch in Bangladesh, some experts expect that it could happen as soon as mid-2026. Pending any necessary changes to regulation after which time there could be $billions worth of remittances sent from the United States and elsewhere via PayPal to the Bangladeshi economy. It would subsequently compete with bKash as an international money transfer service.
Why It Matters for Digital Economy
PayPal is expected to lower transaction fees and times, therefore benefitting Bangladesh’s IT Export Industry, capable of generating $1 billion+ in revenues annually. Freelancers have lost up to 20% on conversions; being paid directly via PayPal could potentially save them a significant amount.
The initiative has been approved by the 83 services that are currently live, with an additional 10 planned for launch shortly.
