The move comes amid a surge in shopping activity for Eid across Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet, particularly in the evening hours when the temperatures dip, and office-goers start visiting malls.

Following the nationwide decision, major shopping centres in GEC Circle of Chattogram and Zindabazar markets of Sylhet are also extending their Eid operations.

Retailers say evening business accounts for nearly 60 per cent of sales during Eid as most shoppers prefer to shop at night after work and because of extreme daytime heat.

Officials have permitted longer business hours but warned shopping malls not to over-light or waste power during the Eid period.
