Youth Missing After Trawler Capsizes Following Ferry Collision in Khulna

A routine river crossing in Khulna turned frightening on Tuesday night after a passenger trawler collided head-on with a ferry in the Bhairab River, sending dozens of passengers into the water. While local boatmen and rescue teams managed to pull most of them to safety, one young man remains missing more than a day after the accident, with divers still combing the river in search of him.

The Collision

The accident occurred around 9:45 pm when the trawler, carrying between 30 and 35 passengers, was travelling towards Sener Bazar from Jailkhana Ghat. At the same time, a ferry carrying passengers and goods was approaching Jailkhana Ghat from the opposite direction. The two vessels collided head-on in the middle of the river, causing the trawler to sink.

One Passenger Still Missing

Local boatmen rushed to the scene and managed to rescue all the passengers except one, identified as 28-year-old Rakib Khan, son of the late Baker Khan of Sener Bazar in Rupsha upazila. He went missing in the river after the collision and has not yet been located.

Search Operation Underway

On receiving information about the accident, teams from the River Police, Fire Service, Civil Defence, and Coast Guard rushed to the site and launched a search operation. According to Abul Khair, officer-in-charge of Rupsha River Police Outpost, the search for Rakib continued until 10:45 am the following day without success. Divers from the River Police, Fire Service, and Coast Guard remain engaged in the ongoing operation to locate him.
