April 24, 2026: The airports in Bogura and Thakurgaon, Bangladesh, have not reopened yet, but they will start soon. The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh’s renewed push. The country is changing how it thinks about regional connectivity, especially for its northern districts.

A Big Plan Is Coming Together

In the middle of April 2026, CAAB announced a big plan to bring seven airports back to life: Bogura, Thakurgaon, Ishwardi, Lalmonirhat, Shamshernagar, Cumilla, and Tejgaon. For years, these airports have mostly been closed because of a lack of infrastructure, low demand, or operational problems.

For example, Bogura Airport is mostly used as a military airbase right now. Its runway is only about 4,500 to 4,700 feet long, which is too short for most commercial planes. It would need to be lengthened to at least 6,000 feet. On the other hand, Thakurgaon Airport has been empty for a long time, and some of the land has been taken over, so fixing it up will be more difficult than just adding new technology.

What will be North Bengal’s economy, Boost Means for Common People

Northern Bangladesh has long been behind Dhaka and other cities when it comes to connectivity. Bringing these airports back to life could change the game.

Better air connections would:

  • Cut down on travel time a lot for residents
  • Increase domestic tourism to beautiful and cultural places
  • Make it easier for potatoes, rice, and mangoes to get from Bogura to other places faster.
  • Encourage businesses to invest and industries to grow.
  • Passengers could use more direct and efficient regional routes instead of relying heavily on Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Airlines Will Probably Step In

There haven’t been any official announcements from airlines yet, but it’s likely that Bangladesh’s main domestic airlines will run operations at these airports once they are ready. These are:

  • Bangladesh Airlines and US-Bangla Airlines
  • Novoair Air Astra

These airlines already fly to northern hubs like Saidpur and Rajshahi. They use turboprop planes that are good for shorter runways.

The Check of Reality

Though the enthusiasm around the new airlines suggests that planes will be taking off from Bogura or Thakurgaon very soon, there have actually been no commercial airline flights departing from those locations yet. They are still in the development stage, and there are several major issues that need to be addressed before airline service can begin:

  • Infrastructural upgrades are needed, particularly extending the length of runways.
  • Land needs to be acquired and cleared.
  • Regulatory approvals are required.
  • Airline routes and demand must be established.

The benefits of these new airports will be significant to the residents of northern Bangladesh, once operational, including reducing travel time to Dhaka from several hours to less than an hour.

Cheaper shipping costs for goods

  • Make jobs in tourism, logistics, and aviation.
  • Make it easier to get to emergency and medical care

In short, the reopening hasn’t started “today,” but steps are being taken to make a big change. If done right, Bogura and Thakurgaon airports could open up a new era of business and travel in North Bengal, bringing long-awaited opportunities closer to home.
