Dhaka shoppers are finding some relief at the vegetable stalls this week. Staples like rice, however, keep getting dearer.
Winter Vegetables Bring Relief
Early winter produce is reaching the capital in larger quantities. According to The Daily Star, most vegetables except flat beans, carrots and tomatoes sold for Tk 40–80 per kg, down from Tk 50–100 a week earlier. Cauliflowers and cabbages fell to Tk 40–60 apiece, and radish dropped to Tk 40–50 per kg. Beans declined too, but still sell at Tk 120–140 per kg.
Tomatoes And Beans Stay High
Tomatoes remain a pain point. Newly arrived local green tomatoes sold for Tk 120 per kg and ripe ones for Tk 180. Imported Indian tomatoes went for Tk 120–150. Local onions eased to Tk 45–50 per kg, and green chillies slipped to Tk 100–120.
Fish And Eggs Ease Slightly
Farmed rohu dropped by Tk 20 to Tk 280 per kg, and katla fell to Tk 260. Fish traders said sales stayed sluggish because consumers were short of cash toward the end of the month. Farm egg prices fell by Tk 5 per dozen to Tk 135–140, though some markets still reported eggs at Tk 150.
Rice Keeps Climbing
Rice prices rose by another Tk 1 per kg across almost all varieties, following a similar rise the week before. Nazirshail and Miniket sell at Tk 70–90 per kg, depending on quality. Paijam, BRRI-28 and BRRI-29 are at Tk 58–65, and coarse rice at Tk 50–55. Traders say prices went up by Tk 1–3 about two weeks ago and have not come down since.
Chicken Still Costly
Broiler chicken remains expensive despite the easing elsewhere. Earlier this month, Dhaka Tribune reported that low-income households were struggling to manage expenses even as winter vegetables arrived.
Outlook
Vendors expect vegetable prices to soften further as supplies grow. Rice, though, shows no sign of a similar correction yet. Families should expect the staple to stay a major pressure point in monthly budgets.
