Germany has signalled growing interest in deepening its economic and political relationship with Bangladesh, following a three-day visit by a delegation from the German-South Asian Parliamentary Group. Led by Nicklas Kappe of the CDU/CSU, the delegation visited Dhaka from September 17 to 19, holding talks that touched on trade, energy cooperation, and regional diplomacy.
Energy Cooperation and the Bhola Gas Opportunity
A key focus of the discussions was Bangladesh’s ongoing energy challenges, with both sides exploring possible German cooperation in extracting natural gas from Bhola. The island has drawn attention in recent years after sizeable gas discoveries there, seen by energy analysts as a potential turning point for Bangladesh’s domestic supply and its broader ambitions of becoming a regional energy hub. German officials have separately expressed interest in exploring oil and gas resources along Bangladesh’s coastal belt, alongside opportunities in fertiliser production.
Trade Talks and the EU Free Trade Push
The delegation and Bangladeshi officials also discussed advancing talks on a Free Trade Agreement between Bangladesh and the European Union, a long-standing priority for Dhaka as it seeks to protect export competitiveness ahead of its graduation from least-developed-country status. Germany remains one of Bangladesh’s largest export markets, and recent business dialogues between the Bangladesh Germany Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Bangladesh Embassy in Berlin have separately explored joint ventures in emerging sectors such as semiconductor packaging, inverter technology and solar-panel manufacturing, alongside established areas like apparel, energy and IT services.

German Industrial Presence on the Ground
As part of the visit, the delegation toured operations run by German firms already active in Bangladesh, including Heidelberg Materials, CHT and Siegwerk, and visited the Meghna Industrial Economic Zone in Narayanganj. Delegates praised Bangladesh’s large consumer market and competitive labour force while discussing operational challenges facing German companies in the country, pointing to areas where regulatory or infrastructure improvements could encourage further investment.
Wider Diplomatic Context
Beyond economic matters, the talks covered continued international support for resolving the Rohingya crisis and sustained pressure on Myanmar, as well as Bangladesh’s democratic transition and social development. The visit follows earlier engagement this year, including a June meeting where German officials welcomed what they described as a successful democratic transition in Bangladesh, and reflects a broader European push to position Bangladesh as a more significant geoeconomic partner in South Asia.
