Whilst many generations believe they have it tough, Gen Z actually do have data to back up their claims. They are struggling with high rent, finding work and inflation. But are they really the most unlucky generation? Here is what we know and how it applies to Bangladesh, including youth unemployment rates.
Where Gen Z are really struggling
The reason Gen Z the unluckiest generation is due to studies showing young adults struggle with low wages, high rent, debt and finding work. The study carried out by Oxford Economics found there has been a decrease in hiring, with those under 25 often being the first to lose their jobs. This is made worse by the pandemic, fast moving AI technology and high cost of living.
Why Rent and Rising Prices Hit So Hard
Many young people overseas are staying at home well into their 20’s due to low starting salaries. This is also seen in Bangladesh’s major cities. In Dhaka rent, transport and food can eat up most of your first salary leaving you with nothing to save. Whilst wages may be increasing, daily costs often increase more.
What the Numbers Say in Bangladesh
The 2023 Labour Force Survey showed youth unemployment rates of 7.2% for those aged 15-29. However this doesn’t tell the full story. The NEET rate (Not in Education, Employment or Training) shows how many young people aren’t doing anything. For those aged 15-24 it was reported to be 40.67% in 2022. This was much higher for young women. According to the ILO youth report South Asia has the largest gender gap in NEET rates worldwide.
The Skills Gap Behind the Jobs Problem
Analysts have estimated that around 22 lakh young people enter the job market each year however there are far fewer jobs available. Employers claim graduates often lack practical skills and graduates claim there are no good jobs available. This can both be true meaning having a degree no longer guarantees you a job.
Advantages Gen Z Can Use Right Now
However this generation has tools to help them that previous generations didn’t. Free online courses, freelancing websites and mobile payment apps such as bKash mean a young person in Dhaka, Sylhet or Khulna can earn money from clients worldwide. You can learn design, coding, writing and digital marketing on your phone. Whilst they might be unlucky with timing, they do have options.
