Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and his Japanese counterpart Sanae Takaichi began their bilateral summit in Tokyo on Tuesday, October 27. Takaichi greeted Tarique with a guard of honour at the Japanese Prime Minister’s Office, called Kantei, where the talks began. A joint announcement on the outcome was due shortly afterwards, so final results were not public at the time of writing.
Four-Day Visit
Tarique reached Tokyo on Monday for the visit from October 26 to 29 at the invitation of Takaichi. Following the talks, Takaichi is hosting a luncheon in his honour. He is also due to call on Emperor Naruhito, hold talks with the head of JICA and meet Japanese business leaders.
What’s on the Table
Trade, investment and the Bangladesh-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement will be on the leaders’ agenda, officials said. Other topics include renewable energies, agriculture, technology and skills development. There are a few MoUs being discussed.
Workforce and Employment
Skilled manpower is a big issue. Reports say that a manpower pact is in an advanced stage of negotiation and may be signed during the visit. In July, Tarique urged Tokyo to take more skilled workers from Bangladesh.
Costs of Projects Funded by Japan
Bangladesh is also expected to raise issues of rising costs of Japan-funded projects and loan interest rates.
Tarique will also give the keynote speech at the Japan-Bangladesh Economic Forum on the visit.
