Dhaka Metro Line 1: L&T Wins Major Orders

Indian engineering major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured two major systems packages for Dhaka Metro Line 1, as reported by Business Standard. The project will be Bangladesh’s first underground metro.

What The Two Packages Include

Contract Package CP09 for track works and electrical systems will be awarded to L&T and Sumitomo Corporation of Japan. This includes power supply and distribution, traction substations and the overhead catenary system. The work includes design, procurement, installation, testing and commissioning.

L&T will be responsible for signalling, telecommunications and platform screen doors for the entire network under CP10.

Who Issued The Order

The orders are from Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL). They are repeat orders; L&T had worked on Dhaka Metro Line 6 earlier,” said Ramkumar S of L&T. That line is already commercially functional.

Line 1 is about

financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), will run about 31 km. Line 1, It has Airport Route from Kamalapur to Airport and Purbachal Route from Natun Bazar to Purbachal Terminal.

How Big Is The Deal?

Package-wise values are not given by L&T. BW Businessworld classifies the orders in the “major” category, which it defines in the ₹5,000 crore to ₹10,000 crore range. Reports do not give an overall dollar figure.

Helpful experience

L&T said it has the capability to integrate complex railroad systems, citing its work on Dhaka Metro Line 6 and the ongoing Jakarta Metro project.

L&T has not provided a timeline for the completion, Metro Rail News reports. Cost control and timescales will be important on a project of this size.

With the contracts Dhaka gets systems to run an underground line. For L&T, they add to its role in Bangladesh’s metro network.
