Tahirpur Farmers Still Await Incentive Seeds in Boro Season

Frustration is growing among marginal farmers in Tahirpur upazila. They have not received the government’s incentive seeds for Boro rice, even though the planting season is under way.

Early Water Recession Brings Sowing Time

Farmers along several haor edges in the upazila say the water receded early this year, so the right time for sowing seeds has arrived. Marginal farmers are now waiting anxiously to learn when the government’s incentive seeds and fertiliser will reach them.

Incentives That Arrive Too Late

For the past few years, the government has distributed free seeds and fertiliser as an incentive to marginal farmers through the upazila agriculture office. Farmers say the timing has not worked for them in previous years. In the haor, seeds must go into the soil just as the water falls, and the inputs reached them after that point.

Farmer’s Account

Abdul Kadir, a farmer from Noanagar village in Sripur South union, said marginal farmers did receive free seeds in earlier years, but they were of no use. By the time the seeds arrived, he said, the sowing time in the haor had already passed.

What Farmers Want

Farmers are asking that this year’s incentive seeds and fertiliser be delivered before the sowing window closes, while the haor land is ready.
