Bangladesh moved quickly to express solidarity with Nepal after flash floods and landslides tore through the Nepal-Tibet border region on August 26, 2026, killing hundreds of people and leaving many more unaccounted for. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was among the first regional leaders to respond publicly, posting a condolence message from his verified Facebook page the same night.
“Deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic loss of lives caused by the devastating floods that have struck Nepal. On behalf of my people and Government, I convey our deepest condolences to Prime Minister Balendra Shah and the people of Nepal.”
Tarique Rahman added that Bangladesh stood ready to extend whatever support Nepal might need during this period of distress.
Khalilur Rahman Formalises The Message
The following morning, Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman placed a phone call to his Nepalese counterpart, Shisir Khanal, to formally relay the prime minister’s condolences and reaffirm Dhaka’s solidarity with Kathmandu. According to Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Khalilur described the disaster in blunt terms.
“A terrible tragedy.”
He told Khanal that Bangladesh’s thoughts and prayers were with the families who had lost loved ones, and confirmed that no Bangladeshi nationals had been reported among the casualties so far. He also asked the Nepalese government for support should any such case emerge later.
Nepal Says Assessment Still Underway
Foreign Minister Khanal thanked Bangladesh for its outreach but said Nepalese authorities were still working to determine the full scope of the damage. He indicated that Nepal would communicate any specific assistance it needed from Bangladesh once a comprehensive damage assessment had been completed, leaving the scale and nature of Dhaka’s eventual support open for now.
