The HSC 2026 exam season in Bangladesh is in a serious bottleneck. Following days of continuous rain, the Chattogram Education Board has declared the cancellation of HSC and equivalent examinations in all the districts under it. For lakhs of anxious students and parents who are worried about their wards, this sudden change means fresh waiting, fresh planning and a lot of questions about what happens next.
Reason HSC Exam Was Postponed
The decision was taken following the heaviest single-day rainfall in July in 43 years in the city of Chattogram. The city had 394 millimetres of rain in the 24 hours to Tuesday evening, the highest for one day in July for 43 years. Many of the exam centres were cut off, and the roads were waterlogged, so it was not possible to continue the exam safely.
The Bangladesh Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee published a notice on Tuesday signed by Committee Chairman Prof Syed Akhtaruzzaman announcing the postponement. The deferment includes HSC, Alim, HSC (BMT), HSC (Vocational) and Diploma in Commerce examinations scheduled to be held on July 8 under the Chattogram board.
Which Districts Are Impacted?
The suspension wasn’t a one-time deal. The flood reports came in, and the release was district by district.
- Chattogram, Rangamati exams postponed on Tuesday evening
- A separate order soon after adjourned Cox’s Bazar exams
Initially, the exams were to be held as usual for students of Bandarban and Khagrachhari, but later the suspension was extended to all districts under the Chattogram board.
The exams of all other education boards of the country will be held as per schedule, and only the students of the Chattogram board will be affected.
The revised schedule of the deferred exams will be announced later, and students are advised to keep checking their board’s official website instead of falling for rumours.
Not the First Time
Floods have become a regular reason for delays in exams in Bangladesh. In 2022, the HSC and equivalent exams held under the Chattogram, Madrasa and Technical education boards were delayed by 10 days due to flooding. Like the Madrasa and Technical boards, the Chattogram Education Board in 2023 postponed the exams by 10 days due to natural disasters. The flood season is now often coinciding with the exam season for families in the Chattogram Hill Tracts and coastal districts.
What Parents and Students Can Do
- Do not visit the examination centre until a fresh date is officially announced.
- Regularly check the website of the Chattogram Education Board and the Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee for notices.
- Grab your textbooks and notes because once the weather clears, the gap can close quickly.
- If your family is in a flood-hit area, safety first, studies
- If students or relatives in a mess or hostel need cash for food, transport or medicine, parents outside the flood zone can send emergency funds through bKash, Nagad or Rocket.
- Save the helpline numbers of the local Upazila administration for evacuation.
Reassurance in a time of crisis
Rain keeps families indoors, and a hot meal can boost morale. On flood days when it is not safe to go out, most Bangladeshi households settle for crispy onion pakora with tea, a bowl of warm tomato soup or a plate of khichuri with egg. A cup of hot zinger tea makes a nice finish, especially while refreshing the exam notice page every 3 hours.
