Bangladesh achieved a major diplomatic victory on June 2, 2026, with a historic vote at the UN headquarters in New York. Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman won a tough fight against Andreas Kakouris of Cyprus to be elected President of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, positioning himself to lead the world body through a critical year of rising global crises, UN reforms and major leadership changes. But who is the man behind this historic victory? That’s five facts to know.
DrRahman’s academic credentials are outstanding
He earned his PhD degree from Harvard University. He has a first-class MA in Economics from the University of Dhaka. He studied at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and later completed his PhD at Harvard University. This rare combination of elite academic training and decades of field experience makes him one of the most intellectually accomplished UNGA presidents in recent years.
He had spent 25 years working within the UN system
Before joining the Bangladesh cabinet, Dr Rahman was very much part of the institution he now leads. Born in 1954, Rahman joined the diplomatic service of Bangladesh in 1979 and, in 1999, joined the UN Secretariat as a special adviser at the UN Trade and Development Conference in Geneva. In the following 25 years at the United Nations, he held senior positions in New York and Geneva and was a lead author and substantive contributor to major UN flagship publications.
He won by a nose in a secret ballot
The election was no mere formality. In a secret-ballot vote, Rahman won 99-91 over Cyprus, with 190 ballots cast and none declared invalid or abstained. The Asia-Pacific region chaired this session. Bangladesh last held this prestigious position in 1986-87 when the then Foreign Minister Humayun Rasheed Chowdhury was elected President of the 41st General Assembly, four decades ago.
His Term Will Oversee a Landmark UN Secretary General Election
Dr Rahman takes on the role at a uniquely consequential time. His presidency will overlap with one of the biggest exercises on the U.N. calendar: choosing a successor to Secretary-General António Guterres, whose term ends on Dec. 31, 2026. That transition will require enormous diplomatic skill and political neutrality to guide it.

His Presidential Agenda Centres Around 6 Bold Priorities
Six broad priorities would guide his presidency, Rahman said: peace and security; accelerating progress on the Sustainable Development Goals; climate action and environmental protection; human rights; governance of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence; and UN reform. His overarching theme – “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All” – reflects the scale of the challenge and the ambition he brings to the role.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said the election reflected Bangladesh’s growing contribution and credibility on the world stage. This is a national milestone as well as a personal milestone for Dr Khalilur Rahman, who has long punched above his weight in UN peacekeeping and global diplomacy.
