Bangladesh has one of the most significant strategic disciplines in agriculture. The B.Sc. in Agriculture continues to attract thousands of students annually due to the expanding agri-tech industry, government investment in food security and a strong track record of job placement in research, NGOs and the private sector. But one of the most basic questions families ask before enrolling is a simple one: How much will it really cost?

Your answer will vary widely if you choose a public vs. a private institution. Here is a plain and full breakdown.

Public Universities: Highly Competitive, Heavily Funded

Public agricultural universities offer one of the cheapest options for higher education in Bangladesh. The prominent institutions are Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) at Mymensingh, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) at Dhaka, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU) at Gazipur and Sylhet Agricultural University (SylAU).

Tuition fees are very low in these institutions, generally BDT 3,000-BDT 8,000 total academic fees per year. Hall (dormitory) fees are normally between BDT 1,500 and 4,000 a year. If you consider examination fees, lab fees, student union fees and other miscellaneous fees, the total annual cost at a public agricultural university usually falls in the range of BDT 10,000 to BDT 20,000 – sometimes even less.

The institutional fee for four years B.Sc. The Ag. program in BAU or SAU is BDT 40,000 to BDT 80,000, which is one of the lowest for any four-year degree in South Asia.

The catch is the difficult admission competition, however. The admission of students in these universities is done on the basis of the GST (General, Science and Technology) cluster, and the number of seats is very small.

Private Universities: More Affordable, More Expensive

Several good private universities offer a B.Sc. Agriculture programmes for students who cannot get admission in public universities or prefer the amenities available in private institutions. Some of the prominent names are the State University of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Islami University, Northern University of Bangladesh and Uttara University.

The fee structure is higher in private universities. In the standard model, tuition is based on credit hours. Most private universities charge between 3,500 and 7,000 Taka per credit hour. Generally, a B.Sc. The agriculture program is a 150-160 credit hour program to complete.

This means that the total tuition alone can vary from BDT 5,25,000 to BDT 11,20,000 for the entire duration of the program. Add in fees for admission (between BDT 10,000 and BDT 25,000), semester registration, laboratory, library and other institutional expenses — and the realistic total program cost at a private university comes to between BDT 6,00,000 and BDT 12,00,000 depending on the institution.

Living and hidden costs to consider

Students, whether attending public or private school, should plan for expenses beyond tuition. The cost of living per month, including accommodation (for students not living in halls), food, transport, books and personal items, is usually between BDT 8,000 and BDT 20,000 a month, depending on where you are. The total cost of education over four years adds BDT 3,84,000 to BDT 9,60,000 to living costs.

When planning, many families forget about other expenses that are typical of agricultural programs, such as field trips, agricultural tours and hands-on lab supplies.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

Students of state universities with good academic results get government stipends and university merit scholarships. The Prime Minister’s Education Assistance Trust also helps meritorious students belonging to poor families.

Private university students should ask about waiver programs – many private universities have 25%-100% waiver of tuition fees based on SSC and HSC GPA. Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) and many agriculture-focused NGOs also provide scholarships for agriculture students in specific fields.

Summary

In Bangladesh, the total institutional fees for a B.Sc. Agriculture degree ranges from BDT 40,000–BDT 80,000 in public universities to BDT 6,00,000–BDT 12,00,000 in private institutions. Public Universities: good value for money, very hard to get into. Private universities are cheaper but require good financial planning. In both cases, you should factor living expenses and program-specific expenses into the total budget from day one.
