Bangladesh is now facing a serious outbreak of measles, and the situation has become more alarming in recent days. The capital, Dhaka, has become one of the worst-affected places, raising alarm among health officials and families.

Death toll rises, causing alarm

Another 10 children are reported to have died from measles or measles-like symptoms in the last 24 hours across the country. This tragic update brings the total number of outbreak-related deaths to more than 280 since mid-March 2026.

Health officials say the actual number may be higher, as many cases in remote or crowded areas are going unreported. The spike in deaths, especially among children under five years, underscores the seriousness of the outbreak.

Cases Skyrocket Across the Nation

The Directorate General of Health Services has reported more than 37,000 suspected cases of measles, of which more than 5,000 have been confirmed by laboratory testing. The outbreak is not confined to one area. Dhaka remains under the most pressure owing to its dense population and urban challenges, although high case numbers have been reported in divisions such as Rajshahi, Chattogram and Khulna.

High Risk Areas of Dhaka

In the capital, several areas have been flagged up as major hotspots. Accelerated transmission is more likely in informal settlements and neighbourhoods such as Demra, Jatrabari, Kamrangirchar, Korail, Mirpur and Tejgaon. Crowded living conditions, limited access to health care and lower vaccination coverage in these areas have helped facilitate the rapid spread. The national risk level has been categorised as high with confirmed transmission in 58 out of 64 districts.

Early identification of symptoms

Measles is extremely infectious, meaning it spreads very easily; they typically spread more easily to children who have not been immunised against measles than to other groups of people. Knowledgeable professionals describe many early symptoms of measles. Among these are: fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and watery eyes.  The most important symptom that will occur with the onset of measles is generally the characteristic rash that typically appears several days after the other symptoms. The rash usually appears on the child’s face first, and then it spreads to the trunk and extremities. If these symptoms occur, medical professionals urge you to contact your healthcare provider, particularly if you are younger or are immunocompromised in any way (usually the case! ).

Steps for Families to Take

Health authorities across the nation recommend that families take immediate steps to protect their children. One way to protect children from MR (measles-rubella) infection is to ensure your child receives both doses of the MR vaccine. Please contact your local government health facility for information on when and where to receive the MR vaccine, or participate in one of the ongoing emergency vaccine drives.  Additionally, limit your child’s exposure to crowds, have adequate ventilation in your home, and use masks in high-risk locations to help prevent the continued transmission of the measles virus between children. Children with any of the above symptoms should remain at home and not return to school until after having received a health professional’s evaluation.

“An Important Time for Public Health”

The measles outbreak is an example of how quickly an infectious disease can spread in places where many people live in close quarters. As these cases and people continue to grow but are not being treated, there will continue to be a large population that is at risk of becoming infected.

Summary

Dhaka is among the worst-hit areas in a major measles epidemic in Bangladesh. The death toll has climbed above 280, including 10 more children who died in the last 24 hours, while the number of suspected cases nationwide has climbed above 37,000. Health officials are urging immediate vaccination, early recognition of symptoms and the use of preventive measures to help kerb the spread and protect those most vulnerable.
