A total of 23 people belonging to a mosque at Tejgaon College in Dhaka were detained on September 18 on the basis of a “secret meeting.” According to the police, the individuals were thought to be linked to a militant organisation that was proscribed, but further investigation was ongoing.

The raid was carried out at Tejgaon College mosque in the Farmgate area following Juma prayers, police claimed. Based on intelligence information, a group of people was thought to have convened on the upper floor of the mosque. Approximately 30 to 40 police personnel, which includes senior members of the force, were involved in this mission. The 23 people were first detained at Tejgaon Police Station. The Counterterrorism and Transnational Crime Unit, the Anti-Terrorism Unit, and other intelligence agencies also got involved in the probe process.
What did the police find?
According to a report by bdnews24, police found 24 mobile phones and a book among the detained individuals. Authorities were examining their identity, backgrounds, and organisational connections. The police have not revealed the contents of the book and mobile phones, and no finding has yet been made showing any militant activity among the detainees.
Why was this group suspected?
According to the police, there had been intelligence that some members of a banned militant organisation could meet up in this mosque. This resulted in the raid and the arrest of the group. Nevertheless, it should be noted that verification is currently taking place. According to a senior Detective Branch officer, the exact militant group of these detainees is not known yet. CTTC will decide on the next step to take based on the questioning of the detainees.

What does one of the detainees say?
One of the detainees, who was identified as Shihab Uddin, said in an interview with journalists that they had met through the WhatsApp group and had come together to discuss some business matters. Moreover, he mentioned that the participants did not know each other before this meeting and had no connections with a banned organisation. This statement is different from the suspicions of the police; that is why the authorities continue to verify the circumstances of the meeting.
Further investigations
These detainees were taken to the CTTC office located on Minto Road for questioning. According to police and CTTC officials, they are still checking the information to decide whether further legal actions
