Not all remittance channels are equal. Informal transfer systems – locally known as hundi – carry serious fraud risks and no legal recourse if money goes missing. Besides the safety angle, the Government of Bangladesh has put in place a 2.5% cash incentive on inward remittances to incentivise overseas workers who send money back through regulated financial channels, raised from 2% in 2019 to 2.5% from January 2022, and it continues to be fully confirmed and active in 2026. This means that every taka sent through an official channel is guaranteed a bonus, paid directly by the government.

The four easiest ways to receive remittances legally and affordably are below:

1. Direct Transfer to a Bank Account in Bangladesh

The easiest way. The sender wires the money directly from his bank overseas to the recipient’s account at the Bangladesh Bank. Bank transfers are generally the cheapest option, with transfers usually taking three to five business days and with fewer fees than card-based methods. All the major Bangladeshi banks, such as Sonali, Dutch-Bangla, BRAC Bank and Islami Bank, can accept inward remittances and automatically apply the government’s 2.5% incentive. No documents required for transfers up to BDT 5,00,000.

Best for: Larger, non-urgent transfers where the best exchange rate is more important than speed.

2. bKash Mobile Wallet (through Licensed MTOs)

For families in Bangladesh who lack convenient access to banks, bKash is today the best choice. Remittances can be sent from anywhere in the world to a recipient’s bKash account via authorised foreign banks and Money Transfer Operators (MTOs), with the money credited instantly – and the 2.5% government incentive applied automatically. They can then cash out at only ৳7 per ৳1,000 from BRAC Bank, The City Bank and selected Q-Cash ATM booths, through the bKash app or by dialling *247#.

With about 80 million customers, a network of nearly 330,000 agents and 550,000 merchants across Bangladesh, cash out is very accessible even in rural areas with bKash.

Best for: People in places where there are few bank branches, or for anyone who needs access to cash quickly.

3. Licensed Online Money Transfer Operators (WorldRemit, Wise, Ria)

There are a few internationally licensed digital transfer platforms that allow direct transfers to Bangladeshi bank accounts or mobile wallets at competitive rates with full fee transparency before you confirm. Services such as WorldRemit offer bank transfers, cash pick-up and mobile money transfers — and all eligible transfers automatically activate the 2.5% government incentive, with no paperwork required for amounts up to BDT 5,00,000.

These platforms usually display the full cost – including exchange rate margin and transfer fee – before the sender commits, eliminating hidden charges. Many transfers are completed in minutes.

Best for: Senders who are happy to use apps and want to see all costs upfront before sending.

4. Cash Pick Up via Exchange House Networks

For those who don’t have a bank account or mobile wallet, authorised exchange houses linked to the Bangladesh Bank are still a reliable option. With more than 37,500 partner locations in Bangladesh and over 600,000 worldwide, services such as Ria make cash pickup accessible in most districts. The sender goes to a licensed exchange house branch or agent abroad, the recipient collects in taka from a local partner location — usually the same or next business day.

Best for: Recipients in places with limited digital infrastructure, or first-time remittance receivers who have never used mobile wallets.

Important Reminder: You Get 2.5% Back Every Time

The government incentive requires no application, no paperwork and no waiting – just the commitment to send it down a channel that qualifies. Each month that a sender uses an unregulated or informal service is a month that the 2.5% bonus is not claimed. Over a year of regular remittances, that amounts to a significant sum. All four of the methods listed above are approved by the Bangladesh Bank and automatically trigger the incentive.

Summary

From direct bank transfers to bKash mobile wallets, Bangladeshis can receive international remittances through official channels with minimal fees — and earn a 2.5% government bonus on every qualifying transfer.
