Bangladesh is set for another stretch of wet weather, with the Meteorological Department confirming that the monsoon remains fairly active across the country. According to the latest forecast, Dhaka, Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions are all likely to see rain or thundershowers over the coming days, accompanied by temporary gusty winds.

What the Latest Forecast Shows

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department, or BMD, said light to moderate rain is expected at most places across all eight divisions, with moderately heavy to heavy rainfall possible in isolated spots. The pattern has held fairly steady over the past several days, with daily bulletins pointing to similar conditions across the country.

The department has traced the wet spell to the monsoon trough, which currently extends from Rajasthan through Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Assam before crossing into northern Bangladesh, with an associated trough also reaching into the North Bay of Bengal.

Temperatures Steady

The day and night have been accompanied by temperatures close to seasonal norms, with only slight dips being reported on some days. In recent readings, Dhaka’s daytime highs have been in the low thirties Celsius. The country’s highest and lowest temperatures have been recorded in places like Tetulia and Narayanganj. Temperatures are forecast to stay fairly similar for now but could go up a little later in the week, forecasters say.

What it means for the rest of August

The current spell comes after a very wet July when Bangladesh experienced rainfall well above the monthly average due to active monsoon winds and low-pressure systems. Looking ahead, the BMD’s outlook for August indicates near-normal rainfall overall, with above-normal temperatures and the possibility of one or two mild to moderate heatwaves in parts of the country.

The department has also warned that one to two monsoon low-pressure systems may develop over the Bay of Bengal during the month and at least one of them may intensify into a depression. Flooding of major rivers remains a concern, and there is still a risk of short-term flooding in the northern, north-eastern and south-eastern regions if heavy rain continues.

With rain likely to continue in most parts of the country in the coming days, people in Dhaka and other affected divisions are asked to keep an eye on the daily BMD bulletins, especially those residing in low-lying or flood-prone areas.

Waterlogging in parts of Dhaka and other major cities remains a common problem during periods of active monsoon, and commuters may wish to allow extra travel time on days when heavier rain is forecast.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1: Which areas in Bangladesh are expected to see rain?

All eight divisions—Dhaka, Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet—are forecast to receive rain or thundershowers.

Q2: What is driving the active rainfall across the country?

The wet spell is caused by an active monsoon trough extending through India and northern Bangladesh, reaching into the North Bay of Bengal.

Q3: How are temperatures expected to behave during this period?

Day and night temperatures are holding close to seasonal norms (low 30s °C in Dhaka), though forecasters expect a slight increase in temperatures later in the week.

Q4: Is there a risk of flooding or depressions forming in August?

Yes, the BMD forecasts that 1–2 monsoon low-pressure systems could form over the Bay of Bengal, with at least one strengthening into a depression. Persistent heavy rain could also trigger short-term flooding in the northern, north-eastern, and south-eastern regions.

Q5: What precautions should commuters and city residents take?

Residents in low-lying areas should follow daily BMD updates, and commuters in urban centres like Dhaka should plan for extra travel time due to potential waterlogging during heavier spells.

Summary: BMD forecasts light to moderate rain and thundershowers across all eight divisions, including Dhaka, as the monsoon trough extends across northern Bangladesh. Moderately heavy to heavy rainfall is also expected in isolated places over the coming days.
