A unit of Adani Power’s Godda thermal power plant in India’s state of Jharkhand, whose electricity is delivered to Bangladesh, has gone off due to a technical fault. This happened shortly after the decision of Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman not to attend the BRICS Summit in New Delhi and prompted BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi to raise doubts about the timing.
Adani’s Godda unit develops a technical fault
One of the two 800 MW units of the 1,600 MW Godda power plant has gone out of operation on September 10 after a technical fault that occurred in the plant’s boiler and water supply systems. The outage cut Adani’s delivery of electricity to Bangladesh by almost half. The Godda plant was designed to deliver the produced electricity to Bangladesh via a special cross-border transmission infrastructure. Therefore, the outage became additional trouble for Bangladesh, which was suffering from a shortage of electricity.
BNP leader questions timing after BRICS decision
Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, the acting secretary general of Bangladesh’s ruling BNP party, has raised this question when speaking at a rally in Dhaka. According to Rizvi, the shutdown of Adani’s unit happened right after the decision of the prime minister.

Why is the outage relevant for Bangladesh?
Bangladesh obtains imported electricity from India using different agreements, and one of the sources is the Godda plant of Adani Power. Thus, the outage has resulted in a decrease in imported electricity at a time when Bangladesh is facing energy shortages and load-shedding problems.
Technical fault behind outage as BRICS link remains unproven
The statements made by Rizvi have brought into question the exact time of the outage; however, according to the information that is reported, the cause of the blackout is related to a technical problem. The affected plant was restored to operation on 13 September. There is currently no proven link between the outage and the fact that Bangladesh did not attend the BRICS Summit.
