The Rohingya issue, which has been dragging on for decades now, continues to remain a top priority at Bangladesh’s UN engagement level. Dhaka wants to get more international cooperation in this regard to find a viable solution and achieve safe, voluntary, dignified, and sustainable repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar. As part of Bangladesh’s engagements at the UN General Assembly, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh is scheduled to participate in a high-level discussion on September 23 about the Rohingya issue. In this discussion, issues related to the humanitarian crisis, international assistance, and the Rohingya issue will be discussed.
The Rohingya refugee issue comes into the limelight
One of the pressing issues at the top of Bangladesh’s UN General Assembly agenda would be the Rohingya refugee issue, which has been going on for quite some time now. Bangladesh still seeks international support to ensure the safe, voluntary, dignified and sustainable return of the Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh to Myanmar. Rahman is set to attend a high-level UN event related to this issue on 23 September, where efforts will be made to find a durable solution to the plight of displaced people. The humanitarian situation continues to be serious. According to the United Nations and its partners, 1.2 million Rohingya refugees were in Bangladesh, as per reports released in May last year. This number is likely to rise in future, with international aid required for the refugees and host communities.

Climate change is yet another key focus area during Rahman’s New York trip. Rahman is scheduled to attend the Climate Action and the Just Transition High-Level Meeting on 23 September.
