Goldy Brar

The FBI has added Satinderjeet Singh, also known as Goldy Brar, to its Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list and is offering up to $1 million for information leading to his arrest. His addition makes him the 543rd person on the list since it was created in 1950. The FBI announced the listing on Monday.

What the FBI Alleges

The FBI says he is wanted for alleged involvement in the Lawrence Bishnoi Organised Crime Group, which authorities link to violent crimes in Southern California, across the US and in Canada. Authorities allege Singh is the North American leader of the group. He faces federal charges that include racketeering conspiracy, extortion-related offences and conspiracy to distribute controlled substances. These are allegations, and no court has convicted him of them.

What is Operation Hardball?

The FBI says Singh and 36 other defendants were charged under Operation Hardball, a federal investigation into India-based transnational organised crime groups. The indictments were unsealed in July. The FBI accuses the Bishnoi enterprise of targeted killings, shootings, kidnappings, extortion and narcotics trafficking. It says Singh lives in California and parts of Canada and should be treated as armed and dangerous.

Background in India and Canada

Goldy Brar is not new to law enforcement in South Asia. He was the first to claim responsibility for the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala on May 29, 2022, in Mansa, Punjab, which he allegedly planned. India’s National Investigation Agency later announced a Rs 10 lakh reward for information on him. Canada also named him among its 25 most wanted fugitives in 2023.

What It Could Mean for South Asian Security

  • Closer cross-border enforcement

India has sought action against Brar for years, and the US now treats him as a top priority. That could encourage more joint work between Indian, US and Canadian agencies on extraditions, intelligence sharing and financial tracing.

  • Gangs operating beyond borders

The case shows how groups that began in North India can run extortion and violence networks in North America. The charges list extortion and drug trafficking as core activities, which suggests a criminal business, not only isolated violence.

  • Pressure on diaspora communities

Extortion tends to target businesses within diaspora communities. Wider enforcement could make it easier for victims to come forward.

  • Diplomatic sensitivity

India has long asked Canada not to let criminals use its soil. Any arrest or extradition could affect relations between the countries, so officials will likely handle it carefully.

The FBI is asking anyone with information about Goldly Brar’s location to contact the bureau or submit a tip online. Tips can be anonymous. The FBI says it and its partners have made his arrest a priority.
