The student political climate in Bangladesh has again become volatile, as new incidents demonstrate the increasing tension between rival political groups on university campuses. In Dhaka, recent reports have suggested rising tensions related to political affiliation andcontroversial posters. However, the largest violent incident to date was reported from Chattogram City College

Over 20 students were injured during a clash

According to accounts from eyewitnesses to the April 21 clash between Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir, both student movements arrived at Chattogram City College armed with sticks and other pointed weapons for what appears to have been a planned confrontation. Following a chaotic scene of violence, some students suffered injuries and required medical assistance, and there were no fatalities reported.

Law enforcement agencies intervened to restore order by breaking up the groups involved in the clash, which has raised serious questions about the safety and security of students while on the campus of Chattogram City College, and the potential for political interference in student life on university campuses across Bangladesh.

Dhaka Campuses on Edge Over Posters and Protests

Tensions persist at Dhaka University and other cities in the Capital but are not accompanied by the same visible violence seen between rival students in Chattogram, with all of it being fueled by some students’ possession of politically charged student organisation posters. Posters of local politically charged organisations, and accusations regarding students’ involvement with outlawed student organisations continue to be a major source of grievance for students who continue to protest against the actions of university and government officials, and who demand accountability and removal of these materials associated with outlawed or disputed student organisations.

For the most part, the demonstrations have been peaceful

However, given the volatile nature of the situation, it is believed that the protests may result in some form of violent confrontation between rival factions, unless handled properly by officials.

While officials at the Department of Homeland Security have pleaded with students to stay calm following the outbreak of violence in Chattogram and pledged to conduct an unbiased and open investigation into the incident, they have also reiterated their desire to ensure the safety of individual students and resolve any underlying issues that contributed to their conflicting ideologies.

Currently, there have been no reported arrests made in relation to this incident; however, investigations are ongoing. Additionally, authorities in Dhaka City continue to monitor the situation in order to prevent a similar incident from occurring.

While the Government’s response demonstrates its recognition of the precarious situation, it has also been criticised for not taking adequate steps necessary to prevent future occurrences of campus violence.

Student Politics and Rising Concerns

Throughout history, student organisations have had a major impact on the political environment of Bangladesh; however, numerous instances of violence have raised questions about the degree to which campuses have become too politicised.

High levels of concern exist among many students and their parents regarding their safety; more students and parents are concerned about their safety as academic institutions become places where conflict and ideology clash. Furthermore, evidence of the presence of weapons and organised conflict indicates that there are systemic issues that exist beyond the scope of any one incident.

Advisory on Safety for Residents and Visitors

Currently, observers and authorities recommend that you avoid the campus areas that are experiencing large tensions; while there is no curfew in Dhaka presently, it is impossible to predict when a student protest might occur or how it could develop.

Therefore, for both residents and travellers in Bangladesh, please keep yourself informed of events occurring around you using local news media and following the recommendations provided by the local authorities. If you take precautions before entering areas close to universities, you should be able to limit your risk of being accidentally exposed to protests or violence.

What Is Happening Next?

The recent incidents of violence in Chattogram and the ongoing protests in Dhaka represent a watershed moment in the development of the Bangladesh education system. Whether the authorities can adequately address the underlying problems of the current situation, in addition to managing this situation effectively, remains to be seen.

In the interim, universities will continue to be closely monitored with the expectation that individuals communicating and enforcing regulations can prevent any further escalation of this situation.
