Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will be leaving for New York to attend the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly. He is supposed to give his maiden speech in the UN as Prime Minister of Bangladesh on September 24.
Priorities of Bangladesh ready to be presented
Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will use the UNGA session to communicate the priorities of world leaders. As per the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tarique will talk about the democratic process, rule of law, and accountability issues in addition to other major international issues. The government of Bangladesh will also take up the issues of sustainable development, economic cooperation, empowerment of youths and women, education, health, and access to new technologies.
The Rohingya crisis remains a major issue
The Rohingya crisis is expected to receive significant attention during the New York visit. Bangladesh plans to seek stronger international cooperation for the safe, voluntary, dignified, and sustainable repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar. Tarique Rahman is scheduled to participate in a high-level event on the Rohingya issue on September 23, where Bangladesh is expected to underline the scale of the humanitarian crisis and the need for greater international support.
Climate change and sea level rise
Climate action is one more issue that Bangladesh intends to raise at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly. According to the agenda, Tarique Rahman will bring the voices of countries vulnerable to climate change and raise such issues as climate finance, adaptation and readiness, technology transfer, loss and damage, and climate justice.
Economic cooperation and investments
As for economic diplomacy, there are scheduled meetings between the Prime Minister of Bangladesh and representatives of international business, Wall Street, and companies like Meta. Investments in Bangladesh, manufacturing, infrastructure, technologies, skill development, and job creation for youth.

Bilateral meetings
In addition to UNGA, Tarique Rahman will conduct a series of bilateral meetings with foreign politicians and officials. Such issues as political and economic relations, trade, investments, development cooperation, and regional topics are expected to be raised during those bilateral talks. Among other interlocutors, there are scheduled to be leaders from such countries as Kuwait, Croatia, Bhutan, Thailand, Pakistan, and Haiti, as well as senior UN, EU, and WB officials.
