Thinking about studying in Japan, South Korea, Germany or China, but financial barriers are stopping you? The Bangladesh government just announced a game-changing solution. Students who want to study higher education abroad will get financial support through loans up to Tk 10 lakh, a direction from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to provide the loans through Probashi Kalyan Bank. Here’s everything you need to know about this scheme, who’s eligible and how to apply.
What is the New Government Student Loan scheme? Why was it announced?
The loan facility is designed to assist students in meeting bank guarantee or solvency requirements that are often necessary for studying abroad. There are many talented Bangladeshi students who are unable to study abroad, not because they have poor grades or weak applications, but simply because they are unable to show proof of funds to foreign embassies. This scheme aims to tackle that barrier head-on, providing students from middle and lower-income families a real chance at international education.
What Countries are Covered by this Loan Facility?
The benefit will be available for those who plan to study in countries such as South Korea, Japan, China and Germany. They are some of the most popular and affordable destinations for Bangladeshi students, with strong scholarship ecosystems, growing demand for skilled workers and lower tuition fees than the US or UK.
Cash Loan or Bank Guarantee – Which Will You Actually Receive?
That’s an important difference. “This is not a handout of cash for personal use. The loan will be provided strictly to facilitate the students to go abroad for higher studies and can not be used for other purposes,” State Minister Nurul Haque Nur clarified. The fund is intended for embassy liquidity needs, not to be withdrawn and spent at will.

Who Can Apply for this Tk 10 Lakh Student Loan?
Probashi Kalyan Bank has not yet published the full eligibility criteria, but based on the announcement, applicants will likely need a confirmed university admission letter from an eligible country, a valid passport and proof that the loan is required for embassy visa processing or solvency documentation. This will be an unsecured facility and is particularly good for students who have no property or assets to offer as collateral.
How to Apply – Probashi Kalyan Bank Step-by-Step Process
Bring your university admission letter, passport copy and documents for the visa application to the nearest branch of Probashi Kalyan Bank. Ask for the overseas student loan application form and fill it out completely with supporting documents. The bank will only approve the loan after checking your admission status and the country you are going to. The scheme is newly announced so it is advised to call the bank’s helpline or visit their official website for the latest application checklist before visiting.
Why This Scheme is Important for Bangladesh’s Future
Students from Bangladesh who go abroad for education often join the workforce in host countries, helping to boost remittance inflows. But it is not about the individual alone. It is a strategic investment for a country – a skilled workforce with international exposure, remitting money to the home and enhancing Bangladesh’s image abroad.
