Public anger over several days in his home upazila of Shyamnagar has added pressure on Gazi Nazrul Islam, the MP for Satkhira-4 constituency, to resign. What started as a viral video controversy has snowballed into a full-blown political crisis, with his own party cutting ties with him and local residents openly calling for his resignation.
What Caused the Controversy
The trouble started on a Monday night when a viral video of Gazi Nazrul Islam in a compromising position with a woman inside a room surfaced on social media. The legislator first said the footage was computer-generated but then said the woman was his second wife, whom he married on June 17, as fact-checkers examined the clip and the story unfolded. Questions soon arose about inconsistencies, such as a bio-data filed just days later that reportedly described the woman as unmarried.
Shyamnagar protest, town in turmoil
Residents under the banner of Shyamnagar Sochetan Nagorik Samaj staged a protest march starting around noon from the JC Complex premises in the municipal town, angered over the controversy. Hundreds of BNP leaders and activists from the locality marched along the main roads of the upazila and held a rally at the Shyamnagar Press Club where an effigy of the MP was set on fire.
Speakers at the rally said Nazrul Islam has lost the moral right to represent the constituency. They also declared him “persona non grata” in Shyamnagar and asked the Jamaat-e-Islami to expel him from the party and take steps for cancellation of his parliamentary membership. Others also challenged his long-time claim that he was a freedom fighter, saying he was in fact connected to a group that was alleged to have carried out repression in the area in an earlier period.
Some of the protesters carried brooms and shoes as symbols of contempt and beat them against photos of the lawmaker. The agitation will continue across the upazila until legal action is taken against him, the organisers said, calling for direct intervention from the Prime Minister and the Speaker of Parliament.
Jamaat-e-Islami Expels MP
The pressure was on, and it felt like party level straight away. The Central Executive Council of Jamaat-e-Islami held an emergency meeting in the capital on Saturday under the chairmanship of party Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman and decided to expel Gazi Nazrul Islam from the party for what it called moral misconduct. The party said the decision was taken after an internal inquiry and the Bangladesh Election Commission would be informed of the expulsion immediately.
