Bangladesh is hoping for greater cooperation from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in facilitating the early repatriation of Rohingya refugees to their home country, Myanmar. This emerged as an important issue during the talks in Jeddah between the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the OIC, Ambassador MJH Jabed, and the newly appointed OIC Secretary General Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed on September 16, 2026.
OIC supports Rohingya repatriation
The OIC Secretary General assured Bangladesh of the organization’s commitment to supporting the early repatriation of Rohingyas to their homeland. He stated that the ongoing problem had the potential to escalate into broader regional security issues. This highlights the ongoing efforts by Bangladesh to keep the problem of Rohingyas in the international spotlight. At present, Bangladesh shelters a considerable number of Rohingyas, and efforts are underway to get them to their native country of Myanmar.

Bangladesh looks for greater international cooperation
Bangladesh’s intentions to cooperate with the OIC on the Rohingya crisis have been made clear through the Jeddah meeting. Bangladesh has gotten the support of member nations of the OIC on repatriation efforts, including legal and diplomatic support. Moreover, the OIC has consistently called for a long-term political resolution of the crisis. At a meeting held on September 20 in New York, the Ministerial Contact Group on the Rohingya Crisis of the OIC demanded the restoration of the rights of Rohingya people, including citizenship, and underlined that the return should be voluntary, safe, dignified, and sustainable.
Why is the Rohingya crisis still a huge issue?
The Rohingya crisis is not a new crisis; Bangladesh has had refugees from the persecuted and violently attacked Myanmar for several years. Dhaka has always asked for certain circumstances under which these refugees can go back home. The recent promise by the OIC provides Bangladesh with yet another avenue to exert diplomatic pressure on the international community to help resolve this issue.
