Police in Cumilla detained 624 people in a coordinated crackdown on teen gang activity, carried out simultaneously across all 18 police stations in the district on Wednesday night. The operation ran for several hours and targeted locations identified as hotspots for youth-related disturbances and criminal activity, according to Cumilla Additional Superintendent of Police and media officer Lutfur Rahman.
Senior district police officials took part directly in the raids, which covered both Cumilla city and outlying areas where residents had reported repeated harassment by groups of young people. The largest numbers of detentions came from the Kotwali and Sadar Dakshin police station areas, followed by Burichang, Manoharganj, Daudkandi, and Laksam.
What Triggered the Crackdown
The operation follows the killing of 13-year-old Ishiat Shahriar Opratim, son of Cumilla University teacher Nahida Begum, in an attack allegedly linked to a teen gang. The incident sparked widespread public anger and renewed conversation around juvenile crime in the district, prompting Superintendent of Police Md Anisuzzaman to order the large-scale operation.
Officials said the detainees include students from various educational institutions, and that police are verifying whether any of them had prior involvement in criminal activity before deciding on further legal steps.
Chaos at Daudkandi Station
The crackdown was not without incident. At Daudkandi Model Police Station, a group of detained teenagers broke through a door and left the building amid a commotion after relatives gathered outside demanding their release. Officer-in-charge Sajedul Islam said the room had become overcrowded, which led to the disorder, and that most of those who left were later brought back or handed over to their guardians. Video of the scene circulated widely on social media, drawing further public attention to the crackdown.

Guardians Take Custody, Legal Action to Follow
According to police, most of those detained were released into the custody of their guardians after written undertakings that they would not engage in criminal activity going forward. Investigators are continuing to screen the remaining detainees, including checking for possible links to drug-related offences, before deciding on further legal action.
A Wider Pattern of Concern
Teen gang activity has been a recurring concern in Bangladesh in recent years, with earlier crackdowns by law enforcement agencies targeting similar groups in different districts. Police in Cumilla said the current operation will not be a one-off, and that similar drives will continue regularly to prevent teenagers from becoming involved in crime.
Officials also stressed that parents and local communities have a role to play, urging closer supervision of teenagers as authorities work to contain the fallout from the killing that set off this latest round of enforcement.
