Chattogram, Bangladesh: Dengue has been on the rise in Chattogram as health officials and the Chattogram City Corporation intensify efforts to eradicate mosquito-breeding grounds and Aedes mosquitoes. The district saw 82 dengue patients admitted to hospital on September 26, and there has been one dengue death.

Cases climb across the district

BBS reported that 4,067 dengue patients and 19 deaths were reported in the district from January 1 to September 26, 2026, by the Chattogram Civil Surgeon’s Office. Over 3,900 patients have been discharged from hospitals, and others are still undergoing treatment.

Authorities intensify mosquito-control efforts

Chattogram City Corporation has been conducting intensive mosquito-elimination drives, including fogging, larvicide application, and getting rid of Aedes breeding places. Mobile courts are also conducting enforcement activities in localities where breeding places are identified.

Rain creates fresh breeding grounds

Rainwater left in buckets, drains, plant pots, and other standing water bodies can become breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes. Our health team appeals to residents and workers to help us protect and safeguard the community by eliminating standing water around their homes and work areas.

Sitakunda launches focused drive

In Sitakunda, a separate elimination drive was launched on September 26, with the district administration also targeting elimination of the mosquitoes within a week. The campaign 

Community action remains important

Mosquito-control actions alone cannot halt the transmission, officials have said. Citizens are being asked to ensure their environment is clean and to avoid stagnant water for breeding to support the ongoing dengue-control drive.

Residents are urged to take stronger preventive measures

The authorities are therefore calling on the people in Chattogram to practice prevention regularly as the infection rate increases. Those who live in the city have been advised to look out for stagnant water in homes, on rooftops, in gardens, and in workplaces and neighbourhoods as it is a prime breeding ground for the Aedes mosquito, which transmits the virus. They have been told to get rid of or clean water in flowerpots, unwanted items, tyres, drains, and elsewhere. Officials say mosquito control programmes can be more effective if people also ensure their environment remains clean, along with fogging and larviciding etc.

Rain raises dengue concerns

In some areas there are stagnant pools of water, which have accumulated from recent rains, in some drains, small containers and in other places and serve as potential breeding sites for Aedes mosquitoes. The government is ramping up its inspection and mosquito-control efforts to prevent the spread of dengue.
