Bangladesh has returned to India for wheat after a four‑year pause. Since India lifted export limits in August, Bangladeshi importers have booked more than 200,000 tonnes. This change follows disruptions in the Black Sea region that have made supplies from Russia and Ukraine less reliable and have driven wheat prices higher worldwide.
Wheat returns to Bangladesh?
India used to supply almost 70% of Bangladesh’s wheat before New Delhi limited exports in 2022. After that, Bangladesh bought wheat from Argentina, Canada, Russia, and especially from the Black Sea region. The recent easing of India’s export restrictions has reopened that trade route. Bangladeshi buyers have already booked more than 200,000 tonnes of Indian wheat, the first large orders since 2022.
Price is driving the buying decision.
Cost is a reason for the renewed interest in Indian wheat. Indian wheat delivered mostly by rail is quoted at about $305 to $326 per tonne. By comparison, Australian wheat has climbed above $450 per tonne for Bangladeshi buyers, according to industry sources cited by Bloomberg. India also has an advantage. Wheat can cross the land border by rail, cutting both travel time and freight costs compared with supplies that travel distances by sea.
Black Sea disruptions reshape wheat trade
The change is also tied to disruptions around the Black Sea, a huge wheat‑exporting area worldwide. Attacks on ports, ships and grain infrastructure have stopped shipments from Russia and Ukraine, making Asian buyers look for sources. Australia has gained from some of this shifted demand. Higher prices have made wheat more costly for import‑heavy markets like Bangladesh. S&P Global said that Australian wheat prices hit highs in August because Black Sea supply fell.

Bangladesh faces a wheat affordability challenge
Bangladesh brings in over 7 million tonnes of wheat each year. Depends on imports for over 80 per cent of its wheat‑based meals. High global prices are a worry for Bangladesh’s food market. The strain shows up in the flour market. Refined wheat flour in Dhaka has gone up 17 per cent in the last month, says Bangladesh’s state‑run Trading Corporation.
What does India’s return mean for the market?
India’s fresh export push happens when wheat supply in India has grown, and export limits have loosened. The USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service says Indian wheat exports should climb to about 2 million tonnes in the 2026/27 season, then four times the earlier figure, in its report.
