Gazipur Safari Park Welcomes Four Nilgai Calves

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Gazipur has welcomed four new nilgai calves, adding a hopeful note for wildlife lovers in Bangladesh. The mothers are reportedly staying close to their young and keeping a careful watch over them.

A Rare Antelope in Bangladesh

Nilgai is the largest antelope in Asia. The animal is considered rare in Bangladesh, which makes every birth at the park worth celebrating.

How the Nilgai Family Grew

The park’s nilgai story began with a pair brought from Ramsagar National Park in Dinajpur, the female first and the male in 2020. The first batch of calves was born on 1 August 2021. In 2025, a nilgai rescued by locals in Natore’s Bagatipara upazila was transferred to the park.

Mothers Stay Alert

Nilgai mothers are known to be cautious in the early days. After the first births in 2021, the animals went into hiding for security and were seen again once the calves had grown. The mothers’ protective behaviour this time follows the same instinct.

Why These Births Matter

Each new calf strengthens the park’s breeding record and supports conservation work. Safari parks also give visitors a chance to learn about wildlife that is rarely seen in the country.

Visiting the Park

Visitors can look for the nilgai in the park’s deer safari area, which also houses deer species. Keeping a respectful distance and avoiding loud noise will help the mothers and calves stay calm during these early weeks.
