The community is outraged after the deadly murder of the caretaker of a Hindu temple in south-east Bangladesh. Due to the suspicious nature of the murder, members of the Hindu community have reacted in a visceral way, creating tensions within the existing political structure and demanding that the government investigate the matter urgently and with substantial force.

Who Was the Victim?

His name was Nayan Sadhu (also referred to in some reports as Nayan Das), 35 to 40 years of age, and he was the caretaker (also known as a priest) for a Hindu temple located in Dohazari/Satkania in the greater Chittagong area. He had been a member of this community for many years; had performed his religious duties out of this temple; and had a very subdued manner, overall, throughout his life.

Where and How Was the Body Found?

The body of Nayan was found hanging from a tree in a hilly, secluded location close to Khurushkul, which is in the Sadar Upazila of Cox’s Bazar. Nayan had been missing since April 19th, 2026, when authorities finally discovered the body three days later.

Residents and groups working to eliminate violence against LGBT individuals have greatly questioned the circumstances under which Nayan’s body was found, strongly disputing any possibility that Nayan committed suicide and suggesting that foul play may have been involved.

Police Response So Far

Police are currently conducting an investigation into the incident, and have opened a case as the nature of Nayan’s death is being considered to be “suspicious.” Authorities have reported that Nayan may have been abducted by two unidentified individuals prior to his being found; therefore, it is unclear whether or not Nayan’s death will be identified as a “murder,” “suicide,” or otherwise until an official statement is released.

Due to the fact that no clear conclusion has been drawn regarding Nayan’s death, public concern about Nayan’s death continues to increase.

Minority Groups Demand Justice

The Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council and the Bangladesh Puja Celebration Council have denounced this event as a “murder” and are calling for an immediate arrest of the person or people responsible to be punished as severely as possible.

Advocates cite the disappearance of the caretaker, the alleged abduction, and the eventual discovery of the body in a remote area as indicating that it was a violent and targeted act rather than an isolated event.

A Broader Pattern of Concern

This crime happens at a time of increased fearfulness for many of the smaller religious communities within Bangladesh. In the first few months of 2026 alone, reports indicate there have been 130 separate reports of violence or other forms of intimidation against religious minorities.

As a consequence, the death of this individual cannot be looked at in isolation but instead is part of a broader pattern of discrimination against minority religions in Bangladesh. The International Human Rights group that has worked on this project and has done so successfully are now calling for better legal protection in such cases, more timely trials and greater preventative measures in order to eliminate violence against these populations.

What Will Happen Next?

The next part of this case will be dependent on the autopsy results and further investigative action being taken by the police as a result of this event. In the meantime, there is considerable pressure being placed upon the appropriate authorities to ensure an open and fair investigation. The case is much larger than this specific act, as it pertains to the restoration of justice for minority religious groups throughout Bangladesh.
